Doing Workstations The Right Way

What You Need to Know About Servers and Workstations

Many establishments require the use of computers. When you go to establishments that make heavy use of computers, you will come across the terms servers and workstations. Even if you hear these two words many times, you may still not know what differs one from the other. One of the things that you need to know about the idea of computer users is that some think that each user has their own processor. However, this was never the case. The processing power of computer networks comes from a central mainframe referred to as the server. For the central mainframe, all individual workstations will be connected to it. A limited time is provided to each workstation to send their work to the main processor. The existence of personal computers no longer rely on this processing method. Today, you refer to the workstation as your personal computer. On the other hand, servers function as central machines that offer data to workstations.

The computer that deals with data requests from other computers is what you call as the server. The so-called website servers function to give the computers of visitors the data that they want in the form of web pages. For the servers of the local network of companies, however, they provide files to every computer of the employees. Servers are capable of hosting applications; however, people can only access the application through their computers. You can’t expect employees to be working on servers when they do their job. They only do so when their work is related to the maintenance of the server.

If you sit down on your desktop or laptop computer to create a presentation or report, you are using a workstation. Their sole purpose is to generate your presentation or text file. If you look at an average server-workstation model, the computer that you use for work is a workstation. In present-day terminology, though, the term workstation is used to refer to high-end computers in the office that do complicated computational tasks. Some of these complicated tasks include graphic rendering and design and advanced data modeling.

Speaking of basic hardware, both servers and workstations are similar. They both have network adapters, processors, RAM, and hard drivers. You can even take a desktop tower and transform its software from that of a workstation to that of a server. Many companies sell hardware to ensure that servers are kept optimal. To stack server racks, you have the server blade. When you look at servers, you will not see a video card that you can plug into a screen. For the maintenance of server computers, server administrators will only need to log into the server using their desktops and laptops. It is not at all difficult to convert your workstation into a server. Unfortunately, you cannot use the specialized hardware in servers for your simple workstations.
